Ryan Kolbeck was born and raised in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. After attending the University of South Dakota School of Law, Ryan’s desire to help others in his community persuaded him to work for the Minnehaha County Public Defenders Office from 2005-2011 and is licensed to practice in South Dakota and the 8th Circuit Federal District Court. During this time, Ryan gained valuable experience defending clients accused of all types of criminal activities.
Seeing a need in the State Legislature to help those accused of a crime, Ryan helped form the South Dakota Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers in 2009. This group now has over 75 lawyers from South Dakota who lobby the legislature and work together to share information to help everyone defend criminal cases. In a position voted to by his colleagues, Ryan has been the organization’s President since its founding. Due to this work and other contributions to the community, Ryan was voted the South Dakota Young Lawyer of the Year in 2010.
Eager to learn more about the law and expand into a civil practice, Ryan joined the Hoy Trial Lawyers in 2011. Ryan gained valuable experience in representing the injured in personal injury trials and insurance denial claims, learning how to best represent the injured to receive fair compensation for their injuries. During this time Ryan became licensed in the District Court of the United States to represent all types of clients, criminal and civil, in Federal Court.
When representing individuals against the incredible power of the government or an insurance company, an attorney must constantly improve his skills. Ryan does this. Ryan is a 2009 Graduate of the Gerry Spence Trial Lawyers College, considered the most prestigious and selective trial advocacy college in the United States. That same year, Ryan was elected by his colleagues to the South Dakota Trial Lawyers Board of Governors, a position that continues to allow Ryan to work with the best trial lawyers in South Dakota to better represent his clients.
In his free time, Ryan enjoys long distance running and playing a number of other sports, including basketball and fast pitch softball. However his favorite thing to do is spend time with his son, Cruz.
Whether it is a criminal prosecution or a personal injury claim, Ryan understands that the client’s story is the most important aspect of each and every case. With his energetic and charismatic personality, Ryan will work with you to develop your story and determine the best way to tell your story to the judge or the jury. If accused of a crime, or injured and no one is listening, call Ryan at (605) 498-0120.
